Ellington Academy Lesson Plans
Mrs. Rhoades, Biology
Week of April 21st – 25th
Desired Outcomes
Objectives:
Define evolution and explain how we know it happens
Essential Questions: How do we use technology to see the world?
How do species change over time?
Assessment of Learning
Daily warm-ups; monitoring students’ progress during independent work; completion of daily assignments; video questions.
Arts/Technology Integration Strategy
Videos and Powerpoint slides will be shown. Students will watch and analyze a film related to genetic engineering.
Learning Plan for the Week
Hook: What is evolution?
Direct Instruction: The teacher will provide instructions for daily activities and will provide direct instruction on evidence for evolution.
Guided Practice: The teacher will begin activities with the students and help guide them through the answers to video questions, provide resources, and guide students through calculations.
Independent Practice: Students will complete individual film questions and work in groups to work on a representation of geological time and a Jigsaw about evolution evidence.
Closure: Students will take notes on the evidence for evolution, write a summary, and then read about an important recent discovery (Tiktaalik rosae).
Materials/Resources: Handouts will be provided for students when needed; students should have notebooks, folders/binders, their computers, and something to write with every day. They should keep their textbooks at home for a resource.
