Desired Outcomes
Objectives:
Define natural selection and explain how it happens; compare and contrast with artificial selection
Explain how natural selection leads to changes in species
Cite textual evidence to support analysis of science and technical texts
Write an argumentative essay supporting a claim
Essential Questions: How do we use technology to see the world?
How do species change over time?
Assessment of Learning
Daily warm-ups; monitoring students’ progress during independent work; completion of daily assignments; completion of argumentative essay; video questions; webquest.
Arts/Technology Integration Strategy
Videos and Powerpoint slides will be shown. Students will answer questions from a video, construct a foldable/manipulative, and use their Chromebooks to take a quiz and complete a webquest.
Learning Plan for the Week
Hook: HOW do species change?
Direct Instruction: The teacher will provide instructions for daily activities, as well as direct instruction on artificial, natural, and sexual selection.
Guided Practice: The teacher will begin activities with the students and help guide them through the labs on artificial and natural selection.
Independent Practice: Students will complete individual and group assignments and hands-on activities.
Closure: Students will take notes on natural and sexual selection to tie in to the activities they performed the previous week, and complete a homework assignment practicing vocabulary and identifying scenarios for the three types.
Materials/Resources: Handouts will be provided for students when needed; students should have notebooks, folders/binders, their computers, and something to write with every day. They should keep their textbooks at home for a resource.
