Ellington Academy Lesson Plans
Mrs. Rhoades, Global Citizenship
Week of April 21st - 25th
Desired Outcomes
Objectives:
Determine the most important elements of compassion
Determine how different stories teach compassion and compare and contrast them
Compare and contrast the “golden rules” in different religions
Essential Questions: How do art and technology influence culture?
What is compassion? How do we learn it? How do we become more compassionate?
Assessment of Learning
Small- and whole-group discussion; monitoring students’ progress during activities; plenary questioning at the end of class/other exit tickets; in-class assignments demonstrating learning.
Arts/Technology Integration Strategy
Videos and Powerpoint slides will be shown. Students will create a “word cloud” for their definition of compassion and will write their own stories. Students will act out different activities. Internet research and the Face to Faith website will be integrated when possible.
Learning Plan for the Week
Hook: When have you been treated with compassion? How do we learn compassion?
Direct Instruction: Teacher will guide students through activities, model when appropriate, and lead discussions.
Guided Practice: The teacher will assist students with research and model/start off activities (ex: stories that teach compassion; golden rules; making links).
Independent Practice: Students will individually complete exit tickets about what they learned and complete in-class assignments during various activities. Students will work independently to write their own stories and create their own compassion definitions.
Closure: Students will reflect on what they learned during the week about how religions of all different cultures teach compassion.
