Week of May 19th -May 23rd
Desired Outcomes
Objectives:
Explore ideas of beauty in performance in religion
Evaluate cases of religious discrimination in regards to self-expression of religion
Essential Questions: How do art and technology influence culture?
How is art viewed differently by different people? What is “art” in different cultures and different religions? Should people be free to express themselves how they want?
Assessment of Learning
Small- and whole-group discussion; individual warm-ups, assignments and exit tickets; creation of blog.
Arts/Technology Integration Strategy
Videos and Powerpoint slides will be shown. Students will use the internet to research the performance art of a particular religion and blog about it. They will view images of different religious dress and discuss them.
Learning Plan for the Week
Hook: What is a performance that has moved you?
Direct Instruction: Teacher will lead students through warm-ups and directions, instruct about performance traditions in different religions, religious dress, and case studies of discrimination based on religion.
Guided Practice: The teacher will lead discussions of religious art, dress, and freedoms.
Independent Practice: Students will work individually to complete warm-ups, assignments, exit tickets, and blogs. They will work in pairs to evaluate case studies.
Closure: Students will read about controversial cases in the United States and evaluate whether these are examples of religious discrimination.
Materials/Resources: Handouts will be provided. Students with computers or other devices that can access the Internet should bring them to class. For students without devices, computer lab time will be scheduled.

Mon –
(all hour) Assignment: What is art? Analysis of religious performance art
Tues
(all hour) research & blog about performance art in the religion you researched
Resources (you don't have to use a performance from this list, but it is a place to start!)
Instructions: Do some research about the performance art from the religion your group studied.
Work individually (you can research together, but everyone needs to pick one piece of performance art)
Link to the example (youtube video, etc) and write about it on your blog on the FacetoFaith website
Why did you pick it? How is it important to followers of this religion? What do you like about it?
Weds -
field trip - make-up work day for students not going
Thurs -
(5) WU: religious clothing
(10) Discussion: religious clothing
(35) Case studies: freedom of expression (print-outs)
Fri -
(all hour) Case studies: religious freedom/discrimination
Make sure you have turned in all of the following:
-Case studies (religious dress, etc.) - hard copy from Thurs
-Art of faith project (in your or your partner's G.C. Google drive folder)
-Performance art (google drive doc. From Monday)
-Religious discrimination in the US (google drive doc from Fri)
-Performance art Blog on Face to Faith – discuss a piece of song/dance/etc. from another religion and respond to it (Tuesday)
